But any GPS unit can output NMEA tracks, and with those and either Lr or HoudahGeo you can easily geotag the photos. I have dedicated GPS units but I rarely use them for geotagging because it's just easier with the iPhone. Accuracy has the niggles above, but that is more down to the phone hardware than the software app, but given clear sight to the satellites it locks on pretty quickly (but not as quick as my AGPS assisted dedicated logger) and tracks fairly well considering. The beauty of gps4cam is that it makes coordinating with your camera's clock really really easy. Often that's just random "spikes" on the track that probably won't correspond with you actually taking a picture, but on more than one occassion when comparing I've had my phone (a Galaxy S7) place me a couple of blocks over from where I actually was for several minutes at a time.įWIW, on my phone I've been using GPS Logger for Android which is free, has a good range of features, is simple to use, and doesn't hammer the battery too much. in a city with even moderately tall buildings. You will also have a complete track of where you went rather than a sequence of image "breadcrumbs", which can be useful at times, and can do some interesting mapping stuff with the log files as well.Īlso, while phone based loggers will work, in my experience they *suck* compared to a dedicated device in terms of accuracy if clear visibility of the sky is a problem, e.g. Tagging from a GPX file is well supported by software and not that much of an extra burden on your post-shoot workflow - it's normally a case of telling the software which folder to look for GPX files and then a single menu option per folder of images. Geotagging the image files is trivial, but many people balk at any process that isn't fully automated. They can come from my phone, handheld/dashboard GPS devices or from a friend that that was running a track log. I prefer a more generic solution using standard gpx files. If you want to be totally dependent on a phone app, there have been some good recommendations.
